The Report: Volume 1

I have been having a hard time keeping up with the Weekend Report. To be honest, my time is very limited. So, my schedule for all postings must be flexible. Without this flexibility, I could not continue with the blog. So, I'm rechristening The Weekend Report; it will be now known as The Report. With this new title, I will be able to post fragrance news summaries anytime of the week. Enjoy this volume's news.

The Report

  • Calvin Klein will launch its latest version of Obsession. Entitled Secret Obsession, it has top notes of plum, mace and rose; it's heart is orange flower of Egyptian jasmine and tuberose; and it dries down to cashmere woods, burnt amber, vanilla and sandalwood notes. It will be available in September as an as Eau de Parfum and sold in three sizes: 1 oz, 1.7 oz and 3.4 oz. (Basenotes.net)

Reprint and Fragrance Education: Pochet Cachet

Pochet Cachet - The Designer Perfume Bottle

By David Faulkner

There are an estimated twenty thousand different perfumes being marketed at any one time, and that means there must be an estimated twenty thousand different perfume bottle designs aimed at attracting the consumer’s eye better than those of their competitors. Perfume bottle making is big business, and the leader in the perfume bottle making industry dating back to the nineteenth century has been Pochet SA of France.

The History Of The Pochet Perfume Bottle

Today Pochet is the perfume bottle provider for such perfume makers as Givenchy, Yves Saint Laurent, Calvin Klein, Coty, Dior, and Kenzo. The company is actually the descendant of two ouch older companies, Verreries du Courval which had originally been the maker of glass windows for the French aristocracy, and Pochet DeRoche, which in the 1830s was one of the leading producers of painted porcelain and glass luxury items in Paris. Pochet DeRoche became the Paris distributor of du Courval windows, and when du Courval entered the perfume bottle market at around that time, a partnership was inevitable.

The very first “designer” perfume was a Guerlain scent commissioned by the Empress Eugenie in 1858, and Geurlain commissioned du Courval to create the first designer perfume bottle for it. The limited edition “Eau de Cologne Imperiale” sent du Courval to the top of the list of perfume bottle makers.

Until the 1930s, when the company changed its name to Pochet and dropped its porcelain business to specialize in the perfume bottle market, it had handcrafted its perfume bottles from blow molded glass, and even today some of its limited editions of perfume bottles have hand made elements. But its 21st century state-or-the-art factory has enabled it to keep satisfying a perfume bottle market which requires more and more exotically designed bottles.

Pochet and Lalique

The 1930s brought with them the Great Depression and a serious decline in US perfume sales. For the French perfumers who survived, the machine made perfume bottle was an economic necessity, and perfume bottle makers began to look to Hollywood for inspiration. Lalique, which Pochet would buy some six decades later, came out with a perfume bottle for the 1932 Worth’s classic scent Je Reviens was of dark blue ribbed glass shaped toe resemble a New York City skyscraper, and was packaged in a chrome-finished box.

Lalique is still one of the most respected designers of premier quality perfume bottles, and attempts to imbue each perfume bottle with the feel of the fragrance it contains, because the perfume bottle is the consumer’s introduction to the scent inside, and will often be what draws a customer to purchase it.

The Weekend Report: May 11 - May 17

Interesting things are happening in the fragrance world this week. My favorite and established design houses have launched and will be launching new fragrances. Bobbie Brown, Dsquared2 and Jean Paul Gaultier are coming out with new perfumes and colognes. Famous and luxury non-fragrance brands will be launching new fragrances soon. Porsche will be introducing a speedy new cologne for men, and Waterford, known for its expensive and "the establishment" crystal ware, will be launching a new perfume. Thierry Mugler has partnered with Swarovski Crystal. Another celebrity, tennis star Gabriela Sabatini, is launching a fruity scent. Lisa Hoffman, known for her beauty products, has created cutting edge perfume kits. Finally, a youthful classic perfume by Annick Goutal has turned 10 years old. For more information about this news, read "The Weekend Report."

The Weekend Report: May 11 - May 17

  • Annick Goutal's Petite Chérie is 10 years old. This classic is a blend of "rose, pear and green freshness." To celebrate its anniversary, its bottle will be adorned with angels, pears and roses. (Osmoz.com)

  • Jean Paul Gaultier has introduced a new summer fragrance for men called Eau de Cologne du Male. (Scented Salamander)

Reprint and Fragrance Education: Summer Fragrances

Getting the Right Fragrance for Summer
By Joanna McLaughlin

As warmer weather approaches, fashions change, activities change, even our lifestyles change. So should your perfume. You may even notice that some fragrances advertise themselves as being great for summer. But just what makes a great summertime scent?

Your individual skin chemistry affects how a perfume wears on you. Skin chemistry is reason that the same perfume can smell differently on two different people. The warmer months can change your skin chemistry, including how much you perspire. If you shower more frequently in the summer or if you go out in the sun and your skin gets dry, these things can also change how a scent works for you.

The perfume you wore all winter in the house or at the office may not work as you start spending more time outdoors and wearing looser, lighter, or skimpier clothing. As a general rule, winter perfumes tend to be heavier, muskier, "darker," while summer scents are lighter.

There are lots of great ways to get some summer scents. The fact is that summer is a fun time for most of us, filled with parties and social occasions, vacations, and days at the beach. It's a great time to go for happy, frivolous, trendy kinds of scents. Think light.

Some of the best ideas for summer fragrances are the new crop of so-called fruity-floral perfumes that blend fruity notes into a light floral scent. For some fruity floral fun, sample Sunset Heat by Escada or Sugar by Fresh. If you want to get a great summer scent but still want to get something from a perfume boutique, try Little Italy by Bond No. 9 (http://www.bondno9.com) which is absolutely one of the most drop-dead wonderful citrus fragrances on the planet.

Another great fruity-floral line of products is available from Carol's Daughter, which is best to buy from a large perfume site (http://www.sephora.com). Carol's Daughter makes a peachy scent called Groove that is particularly summery.

However, not everybody is going to go wild for fruity scents. Light florals are another good idea. Try Very Irresistable by Givenchy or Chelsea Flowers by Bond No. 9 or Goddess by Baby Phat. These are girly scents, but light and fun for summer.

If you want something a little less girly-girl, there are a lot of fragrances right now that tend to be light and almost cross-gender, that is, it might be unclear in a blindfold test whether they were cologne or aftershave. An excellent example of this kind of scent is One by Calvin Klein. I think it's a fabulous scent, but I only wear it in warm weather.

When buying a fragrance product, your type of product may shift in the summer. In the winter, perfumes and eau-de-parfums work best; they are heavier, last longer, and seem a bit more dramatic. During the summer you may be better served with a nice light cologne or eau-de-toilette even though you may have to re-apply it periodically. But since summer is an active time for most of us, we tend to sweat and shower more in these warm months, so you are just naturally going to need to touch up your fragrance more frequently.

It's true that colognes and eaux-de-toilette do not last as long as perfumes, but the very lightness of these products can make your favorite scents seem more breezy and summer-light. If you can't make cologne last, buy a scented body lotion or cream plus a shower gel in the same fragrance. Then layer the product on. Body lotion (or so-called body butters) in particular will help anchor a cologne.

The Original Chloe: A Review

Do you remember the 1970s? This decade is very special for me. I was born in 1973, and my mother and father, who were both very fashion forward people, dressed me in the most stylish clothing of this era -- baby leisure suits, bell bottoms and seventies-style orange clothing. Even my hairstyle was very fashionable; my afro was long, neat and shapely. I was the envy of all children.

Just as I began my life as a fashionable seventies child, new fragrance concepts were being developed. For women, the most fashionable perfumes were either sophisticated and risque or softly natural and romantic. True fragrances for men also appeared on the market. All truly successful scents had to give a “message.”

In the 1970s, the house of Chloe became “The Brand” for all fashionable people. Founded in 1952 by Gaby Aghion, this fashion house was known to employ hot, young designers in the late 1950s and 1960s. It also introduced ready-to-wear high fashion to the public during this time period. In 1966, Chloe hired Karl Lagerfeld to be its head designer. Under his direction, it became one of the most iconic brands in the 1970s. During this period, Chloe launched its first fragrance, Chloe.

So, what do professional and amateur critics think about Chloe? The opinions about this fragrance is mix. The blogger from Perfume Shrine describes Chloe as “warm, radiant and feminine.” Yet, in the same sentence, she mentions that it “possessed a tad sticky vulgarity that announced its wearer a bit earlier than would be the height of good manners.” Other critics believe it is nauseating while some opinionators mention that it makes them feel sophisticated. But, they all agree that it is a “memento of its era.”

I agree with the “memento of its era” conclusion. The original Chloe is an excellent example of seventies fine fragrances for women. It is very feminine, romantic yet independent. It reminds me of the perfumes that the women in my life had worn when I was a child. I must admit that Chloe may be dated for many women. It does lack the sweet notes of today's popular fragrant creations. Therefore, it is best for older women and mature lasses who want to reminisce about the 1970s.

It is characterized as a floral and orange-tuberose fragrance. It begins with coconut, bergamot and aldehydic (synthetic) peach notes. Its heart is tuberose, ylang-ylang, hyacinth and orris; tuberose is the strongest note among this group. It eventually dries down to musk, sandalwood, cedar and benzoin.

Chloe by Chloe can be purchased from fine online perfumeries.
